How To Choose A Childcare Centre

Posted on: 22 February 2023

Most parents enrol their children in childcare centres in their early years. Unfortunately, most parents do not bother to assess how their preferred centre operates. This approach predisposes them to choose the wrong facility to enrol their kids.

Below is information to help you select a childcare facility.

Compatibility

Your immediate concern when choosing a childcare centre is whether it suits your child. For instance:

  • Assess the age of children in the childcare centre. The general rule is to consider facilities that admit kids that share the same age as your child.
  • Does your child have a developmental disorder? If they do, check whether the facility has experienced caregivers to address their unique needs and draw rehabilitation interventions.
  • What are the childcare centre's operating hours? It is disheartening if the facility closes when you are unavailable to pick up your child.
  • What types of meals does the childcare centre serve? The facility's meal program should consist of balanced and child-friendly foods. Besides, it should organise special meals for allergic kids or those intolerant to specific meals.

Quality

Your next concern is the quality of services offered at the facility. An ideal childcare centre should help learners boost critical life skills and give them a head start in their formal education. Therefore, conduct due diligence to determine whether the facility has a structured program accredited by government agencies and child welfare associations. Moreover, check the core values of the program. For instance, does it focus on academics, life skills, spiritual beliefs, or fostering artistic skills? If possible, consider balanced programs to ensure your child does not get bored at the facility.

Program Structure

How is the program structured? Typically, the program should introduce the kids to simple concepts that become the foundation for complex tasks such as science and arithmetic. Moreover, it should integrate play and ample break periods to ensure the learners do not lose their concentration in class. Finally, it must include parent participation at home to ensure you know what your child learns at the facility.

Rules and Regulations

Assess the childcare centre's rules and regulations. For example, how does the facility ensure discipline among the learners? Ideally, the caregivers should encourage learners to embrace a culture of respect in and out of class. However, they could involve parents if they feel a child does not recognise authority figures at the facility or respect other kids. In most cases, such an attitude could stem from an unfriendly environment at home. Moreover, check whether the childcare centre has a specific dress code.

Child care after school

In some ways, it gets even harder to find child care for your kids when they start school. Not many jobs allow you to do school pick-ups and drop-offs each day and my job definitely requires more time in the office than that. Many parents find innovative solutions to make it all work, but other parents seem to really struggle with finding a great solution that works for them and the kids. That's why I thought I'd start a blog where parents and child care gurus could swap tips on the best ways to organise child care for school aged children.
